Richard Gadd and the cast of Half Man have shared details about the show’s dark themes, emotional scenes and controversial ending. According to Gadd, the finale may leave viewers divided because “I don’t think happy endings, or even conclusive endings, are really true to life.”
A Dark Story About Brotherhood
The six-part HBO/BBC drama follows two boys growing up in Scotland during the 1980s. After their mothers begin a relationship, Niall and Ruben become stepbrothers. However, their relationship quickly turns complicated.
At first, the pair dislike each other. Later, they form a close bond filled with friendship, anger and obsession. In addition, the series hints at an incestuous emotional connection between them.
Gadd explained Ruben’s violent personality by saying, “There are two different types of Ruben. There’s the calculated version of Ruben, and then there’s the explosive and in-the-moment version of Ruben as well.”
Cast Reflect on Intense Scenes
Several scenes in the series pushed the cast emotionally. One disturbing moment shows Ruben forcing Niall into a sexual situation. Even so, actor Stuart Campbell said filming the scene felt less frightening than reading it in the script.
“It was a lot scarier on the page than it actually was to shoot,” Campbell says.
Meanwhile, Campbell also described Ruben’s connection with Niall as both caring and controlling. “I think there’s a constant intertwining of protectiveness and possessiveness with Ruben, in terms of his relationship to Niall,” he says.
Gadd Explains the Ending
Although the show explores violence and toxic masculinity, it also focuses on emotional dependence. Gadd admitted the relationship carries romantic and sexual tension beneath the surface.
“I suppose it is an undercurrent,” he says. “I think their relationship is innately complicated.”
Furthermore, Gadd believes the unresolved finale fits the story’s realistic tone. “I don’t think happy endings, or even conclusive endings, are really true to life,” he says.
