HBO has announced September 18 as the release date for Jay-Z in 8, a new documentary series featuring Jay-Z and music producer Rick Rubin.

The eight-part series will see the rapper discuss the lyrics and ideas behind songs from his career. Rubin will lead the conversations across the series.

Jay-Z in 8 Release Schedule

HBO will premiere the first two episodes on September 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. HBO Max will also stream both episodes at the same time.

The network will release two new episodes every Friday. The final two chapters will arrive on October 9.

Each episode focuses on songs from different stages of Jay-Z’s career. The tracks range from early hits such as “Can’t Knock The Hustle” and “Brooklyn’s Finest” to later songs such as “4:44” and “Family Feud.”

In the trailer, Jay-Z discusses rap’s influence and its appeal around the world.

“The reason why rap is so loved, that feeling of that underdog… That’s why people were listening, that’s why it hit them somewhere,” says Jay.

Songs Featured in the Series

Chapter One will feature “Intro,” “Meet The Parents,” “Can’t Knock The Hustle,” and “What More Can I Say.”

Chapter Two will include “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “I Love The Dough (featuring JAŸ-Z & Angela Winbush),” and “What More Can I Say.”

Chapters Three and Four will arrive on September 25. They will feature songs such as “Lyrical Exercise,” “This Can’t Be Life,” “You Must Love Me,” “4:44,” “Allure,” “Where I’m From,” and “Can I Live.”

Chapters Five and Six will follow on October 2. Their tracklists include “U Don’t Know,” “Politics As Usual,” “Regrets,” “Jail,” “Ignorant Shit,” “Hovi Baby,” “Kill Jay-Z,” and “99 Problems.”

The final chapters will debut on October 9. They will feature “New York (Concept de Paris),” “The Story Of O.J.,” “No Church In The Wild,” “Family Feud,” and “Legacy.”

Jay-Z and Rick Rubin Lead Series

Rubin directs Jay-Z in 8, which comes from Tetragrammaton. Shawn Carter, Daniel Kaluuya and Rubin serve as executive producers.

The documentary arrives during a busy year for Jay-Z. He returned to the stage at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic in May.

He later performed three nights at Yankee Stadium. The shows celebrated anniversary milestones for Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint
