In the wake of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations loss to Ivory Coast, Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has received a lot of criticism online from Nigerian supporters. Despite his significant role in the final match, he ended up shouldering the majority of the blame for the loss.
Amidst the backlash, Super Eagles legend Augustine Jay-Jay Okocha has stepped forward to support his nephew, Alex Iwobi. Okocha, a revered figure in Nigerian football, took to social media to express solidarity with Iwobi, condemning the online bullying the midfielder has faced.
Iwobi, who played for 79 minutes in Nigeria’s narrow loss to Ivory Coast, was subsequently substituted in the second half. Following the match, fans took to social media platforms, particularly Instagram, to direct their frustrations towards the player.
Meanwhile, other Super Eagles players including Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen, alongside popular artiste Falz, have also rallied in defense of Iwobi. They have voiced their support for the midfielder amid the onslaught of criticism.
