Samson Siasia, a former head coach of the Nigerian national team, talked candidly about his relationship with Mikel Obi, the former captain of the Super Eagles, describing a testy dynamic between the two.
“Mikel is a little bit out of my league. He’s stubborn and I cannot tolerate people like that”, Siasia said on a podcast with writer, Matthew Edafe and former Nigerian international, Emmanuel Babayaro.
The seasoned coach hailed Obi’s outstanding performance during the 2016 Olympic Games, where Nigeria won the bronze medal, despite being blunt about the difficulties of managing the former Chelsea midfielder.
Further praising Mikel Obi, Samson Siasia said, “He played very well in that Olympics and actually acted as a captain, and led the players well, and that’s why we got to where we got to”.
Furthermore, when asked about the most complete player he has ever mentored, Siasia mentioned Nigerian forward, Chinedu Ogbuke. The veteran coach referred to Ogbuke as a “magician”.
