Not a lot of shows can boast keeping people on their toes in between new seasons and have people talking about them while the show isn’t even on but that’s Game of Thrones for you.
To be sure, when you end the fifth season with the murder of the commander of the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow, then its only normal that the rest of us need to know whether or not Jon Snow will make a return.
The sixth season of Game of Thrones premiered on Sunday night and I daresay we’re no closer to finding out if Jon Snow still has some role to play. Away from the uncertainty hanging over the air at Castle black, there is murderous action at Dorne with Ellaria Sand and the daughters of Prince Oberyn murdering Prince Doran and his heir Trystane to assume power in Dorne for themselves.
Of course you remember that the Sand Snakes and Ellaria have some unfinished business with the Lannisters- I daresay there’s something there!
Cersei Lannister has had a tough run of luck lately and her life isn’t getting easier. Her hopes of seeing her daughter Myrcella who Jamie had gone to rescue from Dorne are cruelly dashed when she realizes her daughter has been killed. The bigger issue here is that Cersei has lost two of her three children, reminding us of the prophecy of Maggy the Frog who claimed Cersei would lose all three of her children.
Cersei has definitely been pushed to the wall and there’s little doubt that she’s bound to strike back soon.
Speaking of women with hard luck, Daenerys Targaryen has been held captive by a Dothraki tribe with her chance of escape looking stark. Eventually, she reveals her identity as Khal Drogo’s widow and earns respect, not freedom as she is mandated to live out the rest of her days among the widows of the other Khals.
Theon Greyjoy and Sansa Stark’s ambitious escape which is at the verge of ruin as bloodhounds closed on them is eventually saved by none other than Brienne of Tarth. With Podrick Payne, they fight off the guards and ensure that the Sansa is still in the show.
Another Stark is in dire straits, as Arya Stark is seen blind and begging in the streets, she’s even forced to fight blind and after taking a beating, she’s promised even more.
The coup De grace of the episode is undoubtedly the final scene where Melisandre -the Woman in the red dress- takes off an apparently enchanted necklace to show who she really is; an old woman.
I can’t help but wonder, does this improve Jon Snow’s chances?
