In what was sure to be a close encounter, Liverpool squared off against Manchester City in the Capital One Cup final.
Starting Lucas in central defence alongside Sahko, Liverpool’s defence did not inspire a lot of confidence. A knock to Sahko eventually saw him taken off before Mignolet’s awful goalkeeping saw Fernandinho score the opening goal from an Aguero lay off.
With Kompany back to fitness, Manchester City look assured in defence and would have run away with the slim victory. Eventually, Coutinho spoilt their party late on and forced the game into extra time.
Extra time failed to produce a winner as the match drifted into penalties. In a flip no one could have predicted, second choice goalkeeper, Willy Caballero proved to be the hero of the night making three saves.
Yaya Toure stepped up to take the winning penalty and assure Manchester City their first silverware this season.
