Despite seeming up to the task of qualifying out of the group stage of the UEFA Champions league with a 2-0 win against Bayern Munich two weeks ago, Arsenal fans will have themselves discarding such hopes.
Knowing that they needed at least a draw to keep any realistic hopes of qualifying alive, it was a hard blow that they had to face such an uphill task without five key members of their squad.
If Arsenal fans were optimistic at kickoff, Bayern Munich quickly dispelled such optimism with Lewandowski getting on the score sheet quickly before David Alaba made it 3-0 just before half time.
With goals from Thomas Muhler and Arjen Robben, Arsenal found themselves on the wrong end of a proper thumping. It didn’t help their cause that Olympiakos managed to rescue a win after conceding a goal to Dinamo Zagreb.
So, despite their best efforts, perhaps it is time to bid Arsenal better luck for next season.
