Ace Nigerian actor Taiwo Adeshina, better known as Elegbeje Ado, is dead. The Yoruba movie star became famous for playing herbalists and traditional priests in many hit films.
Movie star Kunle Afod confirmed his death on Tuesday in an Instagram post. He described Adeshina as one of the legends of the Yoruba movie industry.
“We regret to announce the passing of one of the legends of the Yoruba Nollywood industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado,” he wrote.
“Your immense contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema, your talent, and the joy you brought to countless lives will never be forgotten.
”Thank you for the beautiful memories and the legacy you left behind. May your soul rest in perfect peace.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to your family, friends, colleagues, and fans during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Baba Elegbeje Ado. Your legacy lives on forever.”
Adeshina rose to fame in the late 1980s. He built a successful career that lasted for more than 20 years. During that time, he appeared in over 100 films. Some of his best-known works include Akeke (Scorpion), Oko Abiku, Kadara Mi and Ageku Abela.
His powerful performances made him a favourite among fans of Yoruba films. Many viewers admired how he brought traditional characters to life on screen.
In 2016, Adeshina retired from acting. He chose to focus on full-time pastoral ministry.
His family has not announced funeral arrangements.
