Eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt has offered a word of caution to teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout as global attention around the youngster continues to grow.
In an interview with Amanda Davies on CNN, Bolt described Gout as a “massive talent” but stressed that success at that level depends on more than speed. He said young athletes are often pulled in different directions early in their careers, making it easy to lose focus.
Drawing from his own experience, Bolt warned that distractions can quickly take over if the wrong people are allowed in. He noted that fame, opportunities, and pressure will always be present, but performance must remain the priority. According to him, if things go wrong on the track, everything else can fade just as fast.
Bolt also addressed the growing talk that Gout could break his records, admitting he is used to such comparisons. However, he pointed out that the level of expectation placed on Gout at such a young age is different from what he faced.
He explained that constant pressure to deliver top performances can be difficult to manage, especially when every race comes with high expectations. Not every outing will be perfect, he added, and learning through setbacks is part of the process.
