The Taylor Swift Artist Director award recognizes her sustained directorial work and distinctive creative voice across music videos and films. Swift has directed projects including The Man, cardigan, willow, Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Fortnight, and The Fate of Ophelia in recent years.
Her directing career also includes All Too Well: The Short Film, which further demonstrated her growing interest in cinematic storytelling. That project earned Swift several VMA victories, including Video of the Year, Best Long Form Video, and Best Direction honors.
Swift has received seven Best Director nominations at the VMAs and won the category four times throughout her career overall. The new honor specifically celebrates artists who push creative boundaries while developing a clear and recognizable directorial voice behind cameras.
MTV describes the award as recognition for groundbreaking musicians whose work expands music video possibilities and advances visual storytelling today. Beyond directing, Swift enters this year’s ceremony with multiple nominations, including Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia.

Receiving the inaugural honor will add another award to Swift’s record when the ceremony takes place in Los Angeles. Hosted by Snoop Dogg, the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Los Angeles on September 27 worldwide.
