Nigerian singer Segun Johnson says hunger pushed him into music at a young age when he needed to make money.
Johnson spoke about the beginning of his career during a recent episode of the WithChude podcast.
The singer said he was involved in several activities as a teenager, including playing football, drawing and playing the drums. However, he said the need to make money eventually led him to focus on music.
“What led me into music was purely hunger. At a tender age, I was doing a lot of things, and most teenagers are usually lost in the midst of being multitalented. I was playing football, I used to be a good artiste back in school, I was playing the drum set, I was doing a lot of things,” he said.
Johnson explained that his ability to play the drums provided an opportunity for him to earn money. He began performing at different events alongside musicians before extending his services to churches.
“But when I needed to make money quickly at a tender age, music was the solution for me. So because I played drums back then and I was a little bit good at it, I started going to different events with different musicians. Then I started playing for different churches when they had special programs.”
Johnson began his musical journey as a local drummer in the church.
His interest in music later developed into singing. He started singing at the age of 24 before launching his professional career as a crossover live band artiste at 25.
