‘Supergirl’ Soars to Strong $18 Million Debut, Trails ‘Toy Story 5’

“Supergirl” flew to $18 million on its opening day at the North American box office, but “Toy Story 5” kept the top spot with another strong performance.

The Warner Bros. and DC film opened in 3,602 theatres. It is expected to earn about $50 million by the end of the weekend. The debut trails last year’s “Superman,” which opened with $125 million and finished with $618 million worldwide. Even so, “Supergirl” posted a solid start for a film that cost $170 million to produce.

“Supergirl” follows Milly Alcock as the titular 20-something-year-old Kryptonian. She teams up with a sheepish alien girl on a quest for interplanetary justice. The cast also includes Eve Ridley, Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, Diarmaid Murtagh, Ferdinand Kingsley and David Corenswet. “I, Tonya” filmmaker Craig Gillespie directed the film with a script from Ana Nogueira.

Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” led Friday’s box office with $21 million from 4,425 screens. The animated sequel should earn between $70 million and $80 million this weekend. Its domestic total is expected to approach $300 million after last week’s $160 million debut.

Meanwhile, “Jackass: Best and Last” opened with $3.8 million from 2,855 theatres. It is on track to make about $8.5 million by Sunday. Horror hit “Obsession” earned $2.9 million on Friday. Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” completed the top five with $2.3 million.
