Oscar-nominated actress Ann Blyth, best known for playing Veda in the 1945 film Mildred Pierce, has died at the age of 98.
Blyth died peacefully of natural causes on June 24, less than two months before her 99th birthday. Her family shared the news in a statement posted on Instagram by KABC reporter George Pennacchio.
“She was only 16 when she was nominated for an Oscar! Actress Ann Blyth died peacefully of natural causes on Wednesday at the age of 98, less than two months before her 99th birthday,” the statement reads.
Blyth started her career in radio at the age of six. She made her Broadway debut at 12 and appeared in her first film at 14. At 16, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Mildred Pierce. The role made her one of Hollywood’s rising stars.
During a career that lasted more than 70 years, Blyth appeared in over 100 films. Her credits include Brute Force (1947), The Great Caruso (1951), Thunder on the Hill (1951), and The Student Prince (1954). She also appeared in television shows and musical theatre before retiring in 1985.
The family also remembered her love for charity work and creative hobbies.
“…Ann was active in philanthropy and volunteered for many causes. Her family says she loved her garden, knitting and oil painting.
“She was known for gifting her work to friends and family. Ann and her late husband, Dr James McNulty, had five children, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
“There’s also a star that bears her name on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her family says she was known for personally answering all of her fan mail, which she was grateful to receive. May this lovely lady R.l.P.”
