Whoopi Goldberg, Jenifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams and Vivica A. Fox will star in Netflix’s upcoming comedy film Women Like Us. The project comes from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground and Charles D. King’s Macro Film Studios.

Tasha Smith, known for Bel-Air, Survival of the Thickest and Mayor of Kingstown, will direct the film. Ali Kinney wrote the original script, while Tracy Oliver contributed to the screenplay. Production will begin in New York City this fall.

The story centres on friendship, grief and second chances. It starts when a “recently widowed woman is dragged to the Hamptons by her lifelong best friends and sister on what should have been her 30th anniversary.”

The trip soon takes an unexpected turn. According to the official logline, “the weekend becomes a reckoning, with grief, with marriage, with the sisterhood that’s carried them throughout the years, and with the realisation that dreams don’t have an expiration date.”

Women Like Us marks the first partnership between Macro Film Studios and Higher Ground. Macro has produced acclaimed films such as Judas and the Black Messiah, Fences and One of Them Days.

The film also strengthens Higher Ground’s relationship with Netflix. The company previously produced projects including Leave the World Behind, American Symphony and Rustin for the streaming platform.

Netflix has also teamed up with Higher Ground on upcoming projects. These include the series All the Sinners Bleed and The Altruists. A mother-daughter comedy film starring Julianne Moore is also in development.

With a veteran cast and an experienced creative team, Women Like Us aims to deliver a heartfelt story about friendship, resilience and new beginnings.
