The New York Knicks will chase a second consecutive NBA championship when the 2026-27 season tips off on Tuesday, banking on their returning core to overcome a league that has produced eight different champions in the last eight seasons.
New York ended a 53-year wait for the title last season and will look to defend its crown in a competition shaped by rules that make it harder for teams to assemble and retain superstar-heavy rosters.
The Knicks, however, have an advantage in continuity, with Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns all returning after helping the franchise reach the summit.

Their familiarity and chemistry could prove crucial as they attempt to become the latest team to overcome the league’s growing competitive balance.
LeBron’s Philadelphia twist
Much of the offseason attention centred on LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, and his next destination after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Philadelphia 76ers emerged as the surprise winners, with the 41-year-old reportedly choosing Philadelphia after the Knicks’ championship triumph closed the door on his hopes of joining New York.
James will team up with Jaylen Brown, who was traded by the Boston Celtics, alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.
However, fitting five players accustomed to controlling the ball into one lineup could prove difficult.
“They are like a room that has five beautiful couches in it,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst told ABS-CBN News.
“But you don’t need five couches in a room. You need a couch and a chair, a table, a TV and a mirror, and that’s going to be a challenge. Can they all fit, or do you have to put one couch up along the wall?”
James will make his Philadelphia debut at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, just after the Knicks raise their championship banner.
A slow start could test the patience of Philadelphia’s famously demanding supporters. However, a championship would give James a record-extending 24th-season title and make him the first player to win NBA championships with four different teams.
Rivals prepare for the challenge
New York’s title defence will face competition from several contenders.
Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs will seek redemption after their Finals defeat. At the same time, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder aim to win a second championship in three years.
Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors will also attempt to revive their title ambitions.
