Hemp fires Man City past London City as Chelsea retain WSL lead

Manchester City edged London City Lionesses 2-1 away on Sunday, but Chelsea retained their position at the top of the Women’s Super League (WSL) after thrashing Charlton Athletic 6-0.

Lauren Hemp scored the decisive goal for City in the 74th minute, just two minutes after London City had equalised, to secure all three points in the top-of-the-table clash.

City had taken the lead eight minutes into the second half when Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw rounded goalkeeper Mary Earps before firing into the net.

London City responded in the 72nd minute through Jana Fernandez, who headed home brilliantly from a corner.

However, Fernandez was unable to prevent City from restoring their lead moments later. Hemp capitalised on her defensive lapse to connect with Mary Fowler’s cross and stab the ball home.

The victory temporarily lifted Manchester City to the top of the standings, but Chelsea reclaimed first place with a commanding win over bottom-placed Charlton.

French striker Melvine Malard scored twice as Chelsea moved to 22 points from eight matches, ahead of City on goal difference. London City remained third with 16 points.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s disappointing start to the season continued as they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Aston Villa.

The Gunners needed an 85th-minute equaliser from Alessia Russo to avoid another defeat after struggling to find a breakthrough.

Tottenham Hotspur ended their run of three consecutive league defeats with a convincing 4-1 away victory over Birmingham City, moving up to fourth in the standings.

West Ham United also recorded a 4-1 victory, defeating Liverpool at home.

Brighton & Hove Albion maintained their impressive start to the campaign with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, moving into sixth place with 11 points.
