The tragic loss of former Access Bank boss, Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, still weighs heavy on the hearts of millions of Nigerians whom he had touched in one way or the way with some of his ventures as an entrepreneur.
Recall that Herbert Wigwe passed away in a tragic helicopter crash in California, United States of America. He along with five other persons were in the crash and none of them survived including his wife, Doreen and their first son, Chizi.
Herbert is regarded by many as one of the pioneers of the revolution witnessed in the Nigerian bank system between the early 2000s and 2010s.
Before passing, he was the CEO and co-founder of Access Bank, WAPIC and Wigwe University in Rivers State.
In a soulful event held in Lagos, the one-year remembrance was held for Herbert, Doreen and their first son, Chizi Wigwe. Clips from the remembrance have emerged online and it has stirred touching emotions.
Even Herbert Wigwe’s former bank, Access, shared clips from the event on their social media platforms. In one of the trending clips, veteran performer Dare Art Alade was spotted doing a heartfelt rendition of John Elton’s “Candle in the Wind” for Herbert.
On Access Bank’s official handle, this is what they wrote about their former boss on his one-year remembrance:
“A year ago, we lost a visionary leader whose impact still echoes in our lives. Herbert Wigwe was more than a name—he was a force of excellence, resilience, and transformation. His legacy lives on in every bold step we take, every life he touched, and every dream he inspired. We honor him not just in memory, but in action. Rest on, Herbert. Your vision endures.”
