Nollywood actress Omowunmi Dada has urged Nigerians to stop comparing the local film industry with Hollywood, saying the two operate under different levels of structure, infrastructure and economic strength.
Dada made the call while reacting to a post by her colleague, Miriam Ogbonna, on X.
Ogbonna had expressed frustration over the criticism Nollywood receives from some Nigerians despite the quality of its productions.
“No matter the movie Nollywood puts out, no matter how good it is, some Nigerians will still talk down on us,” she wrote.
“You see Nigerians? We are our biggest enemy.”
Reacting to the post, Dada said disparaging Nollywood had become a trend among some Nigerians.
“Na see finish o. Talking down on Nollywood seems to be the new ‘cool’,” he wrote.
The actress also called for greater understanding from Nigerian audiences, noting that Hollywood has had more than a century to develop its structures and infrastructure.
“I wish our audience would show us more grace instead of comparing us to an over-100-year-old, structured industry like Hollywood, which also has a more robust economy & infrastructure.”
Dada began her acting career through stage plays while at university before making her film debut in 2013.
Since then, she has established herself as a prominent figure in Nollywood, appearing in several blockbuster films and television series.
She has also received multiple award nominations for her performances and recently won the Best Supporting Actress category at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
