Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed why his father, billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, earns from Nigeria’s electricity sector, saying the family’s power business generates about 18% of the country’s electricity supply.
Speaking in a video circulating online, Davido explained the scale of his father’s involvement in the power industry, declaring: “Every time you put on light, he gets a check.”
According to the singer, the family’s company focuses on generating electricity, while the government handles its distribution across the country.
“We generate it and sell the power to the government because the government has the authority to distribute,” he said. “It’s not on us. All we’re doing is generating and providing.”
Davido made the remarks while discussing his father’s business journey and the reasons behind his decision to return to Nigeria after studying abroad.
Reflecting on Adedeji Adeleke’s early success, the singer said: “My dad made his first million when he was 23,” adding that it is a story frequently discussed within the family.
Adedeji Adeleke is a Harvard-educated businessman with investments across several sectors, including energy, hospitality and entertainment. He is also the brother of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The Afrobeats star further contrasted life in Nigeria with that of the United States, where he holds dual citizenship, touching on issues such as infrastructure and access to healthcare.
His comments have since sparked discussions online about the role of private power producers in Nigeria’s electricity sector and the growing influence of indigenous investors in the industry.
