Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has celebrated his daughter Adaeze’s engagement to a woman, sparking mixed reactions online.
Charly Boy shared a video from the engagement ceremony on his Instagram page on Thursday. He referred to the couple as his “beautiful Princess and her Husband” and asked his followers to send them good wishes.
“Folks, wish dem well for me,” he wrote.
Adaeze also announced the engagement on Instagram. She shared a photo with her partner and captioned it, “WE’RE ENGAGED!” She also used the hashtag #mrsandmrsgray2027.
She expressed excitement about their future together in the post.
“Here’s to a lifetime of love, laughter, growth, and making beautiful memories together. I can’t wait for everything God has in store for us. Forever sounds even sweeter with you.”
Reactions online
The announcement quickly attracted attention from Nigerians online. Some users congratulated the couple, while others criticised the relationship.
The reactions come amid Nigeria’s strict social and legal stance on same-sex relationships. Same-sex unions remain illegal in the country and face widespread social stigma.
Adaeze was previously married to Metu Anu. The pair held their traditional wedding in Abuja in February 2018 before their marriage later ended in divorce.
Oputa family
Adaeze’s engagement is not the first time a member of the Oputa family has publicly navigated a same-sex relationship.
Charly Boy’s other daughter, Dominique “Dewy” Oputa, is also known to be in a relationship with a woman. Both daughters currently live outside Nigeria.
Charly Boy, also known as Area Fada, has built a decades-long career around unconventional views on social and cultural issues in Nigeria.
The entertainer has spoken publicly about surviving prostate cancer and being sexually abused by a nanny during his childhood. He has also discussed long-standing tension in his nearly 50-year marriage to his wife, Diane.
Charly Boy has previously addressed questions about his gender expression and sexuality. He has argued that embracing traits often linked to femininity does not diminish a man’s identity.
