How much does it cost to make an actress ready for the Golden Globes?
Nothing. It’s free, often for the actress at least but for everyone else? Upwards of $60,000. You might how this is possible but according to this article,
Consider that the custom-made Versace gown Amy Adams was loaned for last year’s Oscars is worth $19,000.
Then there is cost of the person to put the leg work into finding the dress, the accessories, the expensive hair and makeup people.
“There’s a lot of prep involved — we’re talking weeks!” stylist Micaela Erlanger, who dressed Lupita Nyong’o for this year’s Globes, told Page Six. “From talking to designers if you’re doing something custom to getting the samples in and, of course, fittings – it’s crazy.”
Erlanger, who has styled Hilary Swank, Hayden Panettiere, Winona Ryder and Michelle Dockery among others, charges more than $2000 a day and for an event like the Globes, is likely to invoice for upwards of $16,000, a bill tends to be picked up by the actresses’ film studio.
Add to this that the dress designers often want to fly in their own tailor to do final tweaks so the fit is perfect, you can add another $5000 for flights and accommodation.
The bill is already around $40,000 and she doesn’t even have shoes, a bag, hair or makeup yet.
There’s still more:
Celebrity hairdressers, like Adir Abergel, who has worked with Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon, charge about $3000 a day. Include at least a day of prep and you have a $6400 hair bill.
“I look at the dress – the lines, the construction, the texture,” Abergel told Page Six, noting that on the day the hair takes about five hours.
For $6400 we are expecting gold-leaf, saffron-dipped hair.
Add another $4000 for a celebrity make-up artist (one day of consultation and trial as well d-day make-up) and the bill is now $50,000.
Add nails, fake tan, shoes, any pre-awards cosmetic enhancements and ‘free’ jewellery (Amy Adams was given $760,000 worth of Tiffany & Co jewellery on loan, complete with a security guard to protect the precious cargo on the red carpet) and the we are well past the $60,000 mark.
The thought of converting this to Naira is already giving me heartburn… What do you think?
