Alonso dismisses Estevao loan talk, promises Chelsea teenager more minutes

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has backed Brazilian forward Estevao to play a bigger role this season, dismissing speculation that the teenager could leave on loan in January ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

Alonso has faced questions over the 19-year-old’s limited playing time. Estevao has started just two matches in all competitions this season. He was also an unused substitute in Chelsea’s League Cup defeat to Liverpool on penalties on Wednesday.

Alonso dismisses Estevao loan speculation

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the Spanish manager ruled out discussions about a possible loan move. He insisted the forward would get more chances as the season progresses.

“No discussions about that.

“The season is long, and there will be moments for everyone. It’s a process for the team, for Este, for myself.

“But I’m sure that in the season he’ll have his games, his minutes. And we’re still early in the season, but he’ll be there.”

Alonso also admitted that Estevao and other players could be unhappy with their lack of playing time. He accepted responsibility for his team selection decisions.

“It’s no secret that all players want to be on the pitch; they want to be playing.

“And when any of them haven’t had enough minutes because of my decision, I have to take the responsibility for that, that they are not as happy as they could be.”

Chelsea face injury concerns ahead of Man United clash

The comments come as Chelsea prepare to host Manchester United on Saturday. The Blues sit fifth in the Premier League, while United are 16th.

Chelsea will be without forward Joao Pedro and captain Reece James, who remain sidelined with injuries.

Defender Maxence Lacroix is also expected to miss several weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s defeat at Anfield.

“Max picked up an injury, and we expect he is not going to be ready before the (November 9-17) international break,” Alonso said. “He will be a few weeks out.”

There was better news on midfielder Moises Caicedo, who is available despite being forced off against Liverpool with a minor issue.

Goalkeeper Emi Martinez could also return before the international break as he recovers from a jaw injury.

“We still need to wait until next week, but there’s a chance. In case he (Martinez) is ready to play, he will probably need a face mask,” Alonso said.
