Abbas Urges Government to Prioritize Nigerian Youths in Policies, Budgets

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has called on the Federal Government to ensure its budgets, policies, and programmes intentionally address the needs of Nigeria’s growing youth population.

He emphasized the importance of empowering and motivating young people to prepare them for leadership roles.

Abbas made these remarks on Monday while opening a Youth Town Hall on the 2025 Budget at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

This event, the second in a series of engagements with Nigerian youths, followed a similar session held on July 31, 2024.

In his address, Abbas highlighted the importance of youth participation in shaping the nation’s future.

He said, “This gathering underscores the critical role of your voice in shaping our nation’s future.

You are not just the leaders of tomorrow but active contributors to governance and development today.

Your energy, creativity, and resilience are transforming sectors such as agriculture, technology, arts, sports, and entrepreneurship.”

The Speaker stressed the need for government policies to create an enabling environment for young Nigerians to realize their potential fully.

He urged stakeholders at the event to address key issues impacting not just the youth but the country as a whole, emphasizing that building the next generation of leaders cannot be left to chance.

Recognizing the potential of young Nigerians, Abbas pointed to the National Assembly’s enactment of the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ Act, which lowered the age requirement for elective offices.

According to him, this law has opened doors for young people to actively engage in governance, enabling those with vision and competence to step forward.

However, Abbas noted that legislative reforms alone are insufficient.

He called on political parties to mentor and support young aspirants, equipping them with the resources and tools needed for success.

“Across Africa and beyond, young people have shown they can excel when given the chance to lead,” he said, adding, “Investing in youth leadership pays dividends for society.”

He also urged young Nigerians to take an active role in preparing themselves for leadership through education, mentorship, and a commitment to integrity.

“Preparation is key,” Abbas stated, “not just for political leadership but in every sphere of society.”

Abbas concluded by challenging political parties to prioritize scouting and developing young talent to ensure deliberate and inclusive leadership succession.

He noted that the future of Nigeria’s democracy and institutions depends on this commitment.
