Race relations in America took on center stage like never before since 2014. For many, “Ferguson” will forever hold special meaning.
It will be remembered as the commencement of an awareness of racial tension in a country that calls itself God’s own. Today, the US city of Ferguson marks the remembrance of the killing of 18 year old Michael Brown.
Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by a white police office in Ferguson and the killing sparked off arguably the largest and most involved protests of its kind in modern times in America.
Following several other incidents of police brutality against black people, notably Eric Garner who was killed by Police in a choke hold as well as the recent case of Mr. Samuel Dubose who was shot in the head by a white police officer at a traffic stop. There’s an increasing feeling that despite the protests, enough is not been done by the government to arrest the situation.
It didn’t help matters that Officer Darren Wilson, the white police officer who shot Michael Brown was not indicted by a grand jury and was consequently not charged. More protests followed.
Reforms proposed by the Obama administration on Policing procedure have hit road blocks and the standoff continues between black Americans and a system which has refused to protect them.
