Uzor Arukwe rejects being typecast as Odogwu after ‘Love In Every Word’ success

Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has lamented that producers want to keep casting him as Odogwu following the success of ‘Love In Every Word’.

The actor said the popularity of the character has made producers seek him out for similar roles. However, he is unwilling to be known for only one type of character.

Arukwe spoke during a recent appearance on the CreativiTea podcast. He described his role in the romantic drama as a turning point in his career.

According to him, the film brought him more money and brand deals. He also said he never expected it to become such a success.

“I was just blown away because it was one of those things where you know that God uses the foolishness of men to confound the wise. It was one of those films that you’d never think would make such an impact… and that was the film God decided to use,” he said.

Producers want more Odogwu roles

Arukwe said the film’s success has also created a challenge. He explained that many Nollywood producers now want him to play characters similar to Odogwu.

“Two years later, I’m happy that I made the film. It changed my life. More money started coming… a lot of people, brands. Then all the producers in Nollywood now want to kill me with the Odogwu character.”

The actor, however, insisted that he would not allow the role to limit his career. He said his skills as an actor go beyond one character.

“I am an actor through and through, so you can’t put me in a box. I can’t. It is not even possible. It was almost like they feel that they are sure that their money would come back,” he said.

Arukwe urged producers to take chances on other characters rather than rely on the success of Odogwu.

“But I said no. The same way somebody took a chance on that character, you can also create another character and give it to me, and God can breathe upon it, and then it would do well in itself and well…but bring more Odogwu Character, I will do.”

The actor had also previously discussed how he built on-screen chemistry with his co-star, Bamike ‘BamBam’ Olawunmi, in ‘Love In Every Word’.
