Uzor Arukwe says marriage places greater demands on women

Uzor Arukwe, the Nollywood actor, says he is not an advocate for marriage because he believes it places more demands on women than men.

In an interview on the In My Opinion podcast, Arukwe discussed whether society has oversold marriage to women.

The 43-year-old actor said women bear much of the burden in marriage. He pointed to childbirth, taking their husbands’ surnames and other responsibilities that come with the union.

“I’ve never really been an advocate for marriage because I feel like it is more taxing for the woman. She’s the one who bears the children, takes the man’s last name, and has to deal with a lot. So, I feel society is now beginning to catch on to the fact that marriage doesn’t define or make a woman,” Arukwe said.

He also noted a shift in society’s expectations of women. According to the actor, people once questioned women who remained unmarried at 25 or 30. They often compared them with those who had already started families.

“Growing up, people would ask you why you weren’t married at 25 or 30 and talk about how they already had five children by that age. Now, there are even women who don’t want to have children. I’ve met at least two or three.”

Arukwe’s comments reflect changing views on marriage and motherhood. More women now make personal choices about starting families, despite pressure to follow traditional expectations.
