The 2026/27 football season has started with a lot of excitement across Europe. The Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 have all entered a new season with big changes. Some champions are trying to defend their titles, while other clubs are starting new projects with new managers and new players. Arsenal are looking stronger in England, Real Madrid have brought José Mourinho back, Chelsea are starting a new chapter with Xabi Alonso, and PSG are trying to win the Champions League for the third year in a row. There is already a feeling that this could be a very exciting season.
The Premier League could be one of the most competitive leagues this season, with Arsenal starting as the defending champions. Arsenal began their title defence with a comfortable 3-0 win over Coventry City, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard scoring. The team also looks stronger after signing players such as Bruno Guimarães and Ezri Konsa. Arsenal have been building under Mikel Arteta for several years, and they now have more experience and depth. After coming close to winning the Champions League last season, Arsenal will want to go one step further this time and compete for both the Premier League and Champions League.
Manchester City, however, are facing a completely different situation. Pep Guardiola is no longer the manager, with Enzo Maresca now taking charge. City have also lost some very important players, including Bernardo Silva, Rodri, John Stones and Nathan Aké. These players were part of the team that brought City many trophies under Guardiola, so replacing them will not be easy. City have started the season with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth, but the team already looks different from the Manchester City fans knew under Guardiola. Maresca has to build a new team and find a way to replace the influence of players such as Rodri and Bernardo Silva. This makes Manchester City’s season one of the biggest stories to watch.
Chelsea have to start a new chapter under Xabi Alonso. One of the biggest changes at Chelsea is the decision to bring more experience into a squad that has contained many young players. Chelsea have signed experienced Premier League players such as Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, while also adding younger talents such as Morgan Rogers, Geovany Quenda and other promising players. Henderson brings experience of winning the Premier League and Champions League, while Welbeck has more than 400 Premier League appearances. Chelsea finished 10th last season, so Alonso has a big job. His main task is to make the team more organised, mature and consistent while helping the young players develop.
Newcastle United are another Premier League club going through a rebuild. They have lost several important players, including Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimarães, who joined Arsenal. Losing Guimarães is especially significant because he was one of the team’s leaders. Newcastle have responded by bringing in players such as Nico González and have also started a new era under manager Matthias Jaissle. Their first league game against Liverpool ended in an exciting 2-2 draw, showing that Newcastle still have plenty of quality. However, they need time to build a new team and replace the players who helped them become one of England’s strongest clubs.
Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are also dealing with the difficult side of success. Crystal Palace had an excellent previous season, winning the FA Cup and Conference League, but their success has attracted interest from bigger clubs. They have already lost defender Maxence Lacroix to Chelsea and have faced questions about the futures of other important players. Aston Villa have an even bigger rebuilding job. After finishing fourth, qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Europa League last season, Villa have lost Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne and Donyell Malen. Most importantly, Ollie Watkins has now left for Al-Hilal. Watkins was one of Villa’s main goalscorers, so replacing him will be a huge challenge for Unai Emery.
La Liga has perhaps the most exciting managerial story because José Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid. Mourinho has also been given a very strong squad after the club signed players such as Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, Yan Diomandé and Carlos Espí. Real Madrid already have stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham, so Mourinho now has a huge amount of talent to work with. His job will be to bring balance and organisation to the team. Real Madrid have started positively, including a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad, and their rivalry with defending champions Barcelona could become one of the biggest stories of the season.
Barcelona enter the new season as La Liga champions, but they know Real Madrid are coming for them. Barcelona have already lost Ferran Torres to PSG, while Madrid have spent heavily on new players. This means Barcelona will have to be at their best if they want to defend their title. The battle between Barcelona and Mourinho’s Real Madrid could become extremely important as the season continues. Barcelona have the advantage of being the defending champions, but Real Madrid now have a new manager and a squad built to challenge them. The next El Clásico could therefore be one of the most important games of the season.
In Germany, Bayern Munich remain the team everyone wants to beat. Bayern won the Bundesliga last season and will begin the new campaign under Vincent Kompany as the defending champions. They still have some of the best players in Europe, including Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, and they have also strengthened their squad. Borussia Dortmund are expected to be their biggest challengers after finishing second last season and improving under Niko Kovač. Bayern have the experience and quality to win another title, but Dortmund will hope to make the race much closer this time. The Bundesliga could once again become a battle between Bayern’s dominance and Dortmund’s attempt to stop them.
Serie A could be one of the most open title races in Europe. Inter Milan are the defending champions and started the season strongly with a 4-1 victory over Monza. They have also added experience with the signing of former Manchester City defender John Stones. However, Inter have several serious challengers. Napoli have brought in Kevin De Bruyne and are now managed by Massimiliano Allegri, while AC Milan are under Ruben Amorim and Roma have also started strongly. With several big clubs improving their squads, it could be difficult to predict who will win the Italian title. Inter may be the early favourites, but Napoli, Milan and Roma will all believe they have a chance.
In France, Paris Saint-Germain are chasing something much bigger than another Ligue 1 title. PSG have already won the French league five times in a row, but their biggest goal is now the Champions League. They won Europe’s biggest competition in 2025 and again in 2026, beating Arsenal in the final, and now they want to become the first team in many years to win it three times in a row. PSG have strengthened their squad again with players such as Ferran Torres, Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Godts and Lucas Digne. Their first league game ended in a 2-2 draw with Rennes after they came back from 2-0 down, but the result showed that PSG have enough quality on the bench to change games.
The Champions League will bring all of these stories together. PSG will face Barcelona and Manchester City in the league phase, while Real Madrid will play against Arsenal and Inter. Bayern Munich will also face Arsenal, creating another huge European game. These matches could give us an early idea of which teams are ready to fight for the biggest trophy in European football. PSG want a third straight Champions League title, Real Madrid want to return to the top under Mourinho, Arsenal want to recover from last season’s final defeat, and Manchester City want to prove they can remain a European giant after the Guardiola era.

With so many changes, new managers and talented players, the big question is simple: who will still be standing at the top when the 2026/27 season comes to an end?
