Mavo: I’ve never felt responsible for leading Nigeria’s music scene

Mavo, the Nigerian singer, says he does not feel responsible for leading the country’s next music wave, insisting that his emergence as a major figure in the industry should happen naturally.

The 22-year-old singer spoke during a listening session for his latest project, Business, where he said he has never tried to force himself into a leadership position within Nigeria’s music scene.

“Being the face of the Nigerian (music) scene is something that will come to me naturally. I have never tried to do more than I am meant to do. What is meant to be will be,” he said.

Mavo also said he does not regard his position among the country’s new generation of artistes as a responsibility.

“I have never felt any responsibility. Anything I am doing is what I am meant to do,” he added.

The singer also discussed the spiritual inspiration behind some of the songs on Business, explaining that he dedicated them to God as an expression of gratitude for his rise in the music industry.

“The song about God just felt like I needed to appreciate God for what He had done for me. God put me in a place that He didn’t put a lot of people in,” he said.

“He made me understand not just music but the music business, and I needed to appreciate Him for that. That’s why I dedicated some songs to Him.”

Released in July, Business is Mavo’s latest project and features collaborations with artistes including AJ Tracey and SSSoundGawd.
