The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and arraignment of a woman identified as Chisom for allegedly making false accusations that her husband defiled their two young daughters.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe said investigations proved that Chisom’s claims were fabricated to falsely implicate her husband. According to the command, the detailed investigation uncovered major inconsistencies in her story, including evidence showing that the alleged offences could not have occurred during the period she claimed.

“Investigations revealed that, contrary to her claims, the periods in 2024 and 2025 during which Chisom alleged the offences occurred were the same times she had travelled alone with all the children to their hometown in Imo State,” the police statement said.

The command further disclosed that Chisom’s seven-year-old son gave two separate voluntary statements during questioning. In both, the boy exonerated his father and confirmed that their mother had coached him and his sisters to accuse their father falsely.

Investigation exposes fabricated claims

According to the Enugu Police, the child’s statement was backed by video evidence obtained during the inquiry. The footage reportedly showed moments that confirmed Chisom’s coaching efforts and intent to mislead the investigation.

“The evidence obtained, including the child’s video testimony, made it clear that the allegations were maliciously invented,” the statement continued.

Police sources added that after realizing the investigation was turning against her, Chisom made attempts to withdraw the complaint and halt further police action. Authorities, however, continued the investigation to ensure the facts were established and justice was served.

DSP Ndukwe explained that the woman has since been arraigned before a magistrate court in Enugu, facing charges related to providing false information, conspiracy, and defamation. She was remanded pending further hearing, while her husband was released after being cleared of all accusations.

The command described the incident as an example of how false allegations can not only destroy family trust but also waste police resources and undermine the integrity of genuine victims.

Police reiterated their commitment to conducting thorough investigations in all sensitive cases, particularly those involving minors. “Our officers are trained to handle gender-based and child-related cases with professional care,” Ndukwe said. “We will continue to ensure that justice is served, whether for victims or those wrongfully accused.”

Court arraignment and public reaction

Legal experts who reviewed the case have commended the police for their careful approach, noting that wrongful accusations of such serious crimes can have devastating consequences. A senior legal practitioner in Enugu told reporters that the woman could face significant penalties under Nigerian law for false testimony and misleading law enforcement.

The case has also sparked discussion online, with many users calling for stricter punishment for individuals who make false allegations of sexual offences. Several human rights advocates emphasized the need for balance protecting genuine victims while ensuring innocent people are not unjustly accused.

As of press time, the Enugu Police Command confirmed that the investigation file has been forwarded to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice and that the accused remains in custody pending the next court date.

The command used the opportunity to urge members of the public to report crimes responsibly and avoid fabricating claims for revenge or manipulation, as such actions carry serious legal consequences.
