Isha Sessay, an author and award-winning former CNN news anchor together with the celebrated actor, Idris Elba and Asmaa James, a local activist have established a solidarity fund for survivors of sexual assault in Sierra Leone.
Speaking on this new development, Isha Sessay mentioned that the recent rape and murder of the 5-year old, Khadijah Saccoh, impacted her deeply, which further led to the inspiration of the Survivors Solidarity Fund.
The aim of the fund is to bring global attention to the prevalent sexual violence against women and children in Sierra Leone. The Organization in charge of the fund has also disclosed that the fund’s donations will be housed in an international feminist organization in Freetown, Sierra Leone known as Purposeful. This feminist organization, Purposeful will in turn make funds available to other organizations that provide free medical and legal services in Sierra Leone as the need arises. The following are the feminist organizations selected by Purposeful:
- The Rainbo Initiative
- Aberdeen’s Women Centre
- Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equality Rights and Social Justice (L.A.W.Y.E.R.S)
- SMART Women’s Initiative
The rape and murder of 5 year old Kadijah Saccoh impacted me deeply… Proud to be joining forces with โฆ@idriselbaโฉ and other activists to support sexual violence survivors and fight for justice. This nightmare has to end! https://t.co/0mi96ABWmN
