Many calls have gone to the federal government about the need to scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), scheme but again the FG has insisted that NYSC has come to stay.
Addressing news men in Lagos yesterday, minister of youth development and sports, Mr Solomon Dalong, said the NYSC has come to stay, maintaining that its advantages outweighed its disadvantages.
Dalong during an inspection tour of the Lagos State NYSC orientation camp in the Iyana Ipaya area of Lagos state, equally noted that the scheme had not only enhanced the socio-cultural and ethnic integration in the country but had also promoted national unity.
The minister said that the government was putting a plan in place to train interested graduates in skills acquisition after the mandatory one-year service. He added that said such graduates would be provided with a start-up capital at the end of the training.
Dalung condemned the usual rejection of corps members by companies and government agencies during their mandatory service year.
“The rejection of corps members by both private and government organisations is highly regrettable,” he said.
The minister said that circulars have been sent to various organisations to accept corps members into their organizations because they are on national service.
He thereafter made a suggestion to the NYSC management to consider the adoption of a quarterly orientation programme for corps members as against the current practice of once every four months.
