In what is most likely a bid to cut costs, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Haider al-Abbadi, has proposed a decree cancelling the office of the Vice President as well as the Deputy Prime Minister.
Corruption is a major problem in Iraq and the proposed restructuring comes with fresh guarantees from the Prime Minister to tackle corruption. The decree, which was proposed this morning, was immediately followed by the resignation of the Deputy Prime Minister, Bahaa al-Araji.
It’s important to note that the decree must be approved by the Prime Minister’s cabinet as well as the Parliament. Abbadi also proposed other reforms, cancelling privileges for government officials as well as merging some ministries.
