Google made an assortment of sketches of gorgeous dresses on the home page–a tribute to iconic and very influential costume designer Edith Head, who would have been 116 years old today.
It’s an important recognition for Head–one of the industry’s most important figures, but one whom many of today’s fashion fans don’t know much about–and for Google, which, it’s safe to say, has never recognized a fashion designer in one of its doodles before today.
Head is best known for her Oscar-winning costume designs. Her work can be seen on many of Alfred Hitchcock’s heroines in films like Vertigo, The Birds, and Rear Window, as well as Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday,Sabrina, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was those films that sparked debate as to who should take credit for Hepburn’s iconic dresses: Head or Hubert de Givenchy (the latter is now regarded as having designed them). It’s a debate that still comes up today, like with Rodarte’s work on Black Swan.
