Filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan has disclosed his reasons for transitioning the blockbuster, ‘Anikulapo’, from a feature film to a series.
The award-winning producer in a chat with Bellanaija stated that the storyline of ‘Anikulapo’ was too delicate and lengthy, and for this reason, the beauty of the story would not all fit into one feature film.
Afolayan further stated that it is important for Nigerians and Africans to tell their stories themselves, or else, someone else from the outside would tell it their way.
He continued, “Anikulapo is a deep story, i have not started, I have not even scratched the surface. The series and its story will outlive me”.
‘Anikulapo’ is a Nigerian epic fantasy film released in 2022. It was produced by Kunle Afolayan and distributed by Netflix. The classic stars Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale, and others.
The film was shot in Oyo State, Nigeria, and has been described by Afolayan as a ‘Game of Thrones’ recreated in Nigeria, but with a better representation of the Yoruba culture.
In January 2024, Kunle Afoloyan announced the trailer for a sequel series for the blockbuster titled ‘Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre’.
