Damini ‘Burna Boy’ Ogulu is at it once again with Davido.
The chaos erupted while Nigerians were still licking their wounds after losing the AFCON 2023. It started when an X user who had Davido’s picture as his DP decided it was the best time to fish in Burna Boy’s waters.
In what was supposed to be a music bant for the culture, the X user replied Burna’s tweet with a shady comment saying, “Ode, bottled four Grammys”. ‘Bottle’ is a slang Nigerians use that implies wasting, losing, etc.
Burna Boy was not going to let that shade slide. He ignored wailing Nigerians and the AFCON loss to reply to the X user, shading Davido in the process. Here’s what Burna Boy replied;
We could not help but run to check on the DP of the X user and well, we had to wonder; how did stray bullet touch Davido?
It’s no news the two Afrobeats superstars do not see eye to eye and we cannot help but wonder why. We saw a budding friendship between the two for a while until everything went south in 2020.
The feud can be traced back to March 2020 when Burna Boy announced he would be dropping his ‘Twice as Tall’ album in July 2020 with no exact date. Months later, in May 2020, Davido announces the release of his ‘A Better Time’ album slated for same July 2020.
This ‘competition’ probably did not sit well with Burna as he took to his Instagram story and wrote, “July will be very funny and I shall laugh accordingly”. Just as Nigerians were trying to figure out who owned that shade, Burna took another swipe. Taking to his Instagram story once again just hours after the first shade, Burna wrote, “You cannot play football, everybody knows you cannot play football, and you are an embarrassment to the team, but your daddy bought the football team…
Nigerians who live for ‘vawulence’ on social media immediately decoded who owned the shade. Recall that in the past, Davido has been heavily discredited for struggling less and only skyrocketing with the help of his father’s money.
Davido replies by posting a picture of himself and Wizkid on X formerly known as Twitter with the caption, “The two Greatest of all Time”, totally ignoring Burna. Months later, Davido drops a perceived diss track ‘Fem’. It is popular opinion that a line in the song ‘Tell Odogwu say we like to party was directed at Burna Boy’. ‘Odogwu’ is Burna’s moniker and ‘Like to Party’ is the title of one of his hits.
Davido goes on to reveal in an interview with media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu that he believes his Twitter post infuriated Burna Boy and led to the beginning of the shades.
Years later in 2023, Davido drops the famous ‘New Cats’ in an interview. In this interview, Davido gives a shoutout to ‘New Cats’ in Afrobeats who are further pushing the genre, and right there and then to the surprise of many, Davido includes Burna Boy in the ‘New Cats’ category.
Nigerians have kept their fingers crossed and are hoping the two settle their issues. That hope might have just been dashed to the wind with this new X ‘wahala’.
Are we getting a reply from Davido? what could be the problem?
