The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down a notorious market in Abia state, Eziukwu (Cemetery market), after uncovering a sprawling network of counterfeit beverage production. This “dastardly activity,” as NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye described it, has been operating for years under the protection of a cartel that threatened anyone who dared to question their operations.
The cartel’s nefarious activities involved manufacturing an array of adulterated products, including various wine brands like Seaman Schnapps, Henessy, Four Cousins, Carlo Rossi, and many more. They also engaged in date revalidation, essentially making expired products like Peak milk and Coca-Cola products appear fresh. These fake and substandard products were then sold to unsuspecting consumers, putting their health at risk.
Over 1500 cartons of fake and substandard products were destroyed on-site, while another 300 were secured for further investigation. The estimated value of these confiscated goods? A staggering N750 million. Ten individuals were apprehended and will face charges after a thorough investigation.
With the festive season approaching, NAFDAC urges Nigerians to be vigilant when purchasing beverages. Always scrutinize branded drinks for signs of counterfeiting before consuming them. Buy only from reputable and licensed retailers, bars, and supermarkets. Look out for common red flags like unusually low prices, spelling mistakes, or poor packaging quality. Check for a valid NAFDAC registration number and inspect the seal on the bottle. Any suspicious smells or inconsistencies should raise alarm bells.
NAFDAC said it will continue to ensure the level of counterfeit products nationwide is reduced so people will continue to consume only healthy and safe products.
