As Nigeria clocks 60 today after gaining freedom from colonial masters in 1960, President Muhammadu Buhari has compared various nation’s petroleum prices in his address, hoping to prove that Nigeria has indeed done better.

Buhari’s address partly reads, “Petroleum prices in Nigeria are to be adjusted. We sell now at N161 per litre. A comparison with our neighbours will illustrate the point; Chad which is an oil producing country charges N362 per litre. Niger, also an oil producing country sells 1 litre at N346. In Ghana, another oil producing country, petroleum pump price is N326 per litre. Further afield, Egypt charges N211 per litre. Saudi Arabia charges N168 per litre. It makes no sense for oil to be cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia.”

This comment got a lot of people talking on Twitter as some have dragged Tolu Ogunlesi, one of the media aides to the President.

See the comments below:

Mr President,

Should we list other things that doesn't make sense also happening in Nigeria and not in other countries.

Do you know Nigerians are being kidnapped daily by both civil criminals and police criminals.

Does cost of governance make sense in Nigeria? #NigeriaAt60

Dear @MBuhari

It's makes no sense that our minimum wage is 30,000 while Saudi Arabia minimum wage is 3000 Saudi royal which equal to N305, 126.85

Who wrote this disastrous speech self? Tolu or Femi Adesina

These people are adding insult to insult for Nigerians.#NigeriaAt60

Anyone not named Adesina and Tolu would have done better with that Independence Day speech.

In times like this, you send a message of hope.

Tolu will sit on his CON level salary, with benefits and occasional change, and come on here to chat nonsense.

People are literally dying of poverty and you are justifying fuel price. Comparing Saudi and Nigeria… 2 countries with smelling disparity in minimum wage…

Egypt minimum wage is 9200 EGP ~ N220k

Saudi Arabia wage is 3000 SAR ~ N305k

Nigeria minimum wage – tentatively N30k
