Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley has declared that the flooding nightmare is a national disaster.
The Prime Minister via his Facebook page stated that it was going to cost a lot of money to bring relief to affected victims. He also condemned acts of looting during this disaster. However, relief has already began to come from first responders in the country who have risen to help.
Popular Trinbagonian-American actor, Winston Duke took to Instagram to share pictures of the flood and relief being given out saying:
“Friends, as many of you know, I hail from the beautiful twin Caribbean Islands of Trinidad and Tobago. This weekend, my thoughts are with my country as they cope with the after effects of heavy rains and unprecedented nationwide flooding. My heart is with you! I have been stunned by the devastation but also comforted by the amazing efforts of everyday folks towards each other. This is the T&T spirit that I was raised to know and love.
I am incredibly moved by the outpourings of love within the country and like you, I am grateful for the efforts of ALL first responders. Much of the damage still needs to be assessed but until we know the full scope, I continue to keep you in my prayers and I firmly believe that T&T will shine again”.
Initially, various parts of the country were totally impassable, such as Caroni, St Helena, Kelly Village, Las Lomas etc. Throughout the night affected people from the elderly to young children were forced to climb to their roofs for safety. The losses are estimated to be to the tune of millions.
