The BBC reports that the President of Myanmar has congratulated Aung San Suu Kyi despite the fact that all the election figures aren’t in yet. His spokesman told the BBC, “Our message to the people of the country on behalf of U Thein Sein is that President U Thein Sein wants to congratulate the Myanmar people for the free and fair and very peaceful election day,” U Ye Htut
“And second he also wants to congratulate the NLD for their success in the election.”
Aung Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy look set for a landslide victory, having won a wide margin of the 47% of election figures which have been released. Aung Suu Kyi wrote a letter to the President yesterday calling for talks, which indicate that she’s treading the path of caution.
The Nobel Prize winner won the elections in 1990 by a convincing margin but the military backed Union Solidarity Development Party (USDP) cancelled the elections and placed her under house arrest.
President Thein Sein posted on his Facebook page, “Our government will respect the people’s decision and choice and will hand over power as scheduled,”
