YouTube to Count Views From First Frame Across All Video Formats

YouTube has announced a major YouTube view count update, with public views counting from the first frame across formats. The change takes effect on August 24, 2026, creating one consistent definition for views across Shorts, long-form videos, and live content.

Previously, YouTube used different approaches when measuring views across various video formats, creating differences between content types. Under the new system, creators will see public view counts reflect every video start, regardless of the format.

However, YouTube will retain its existing watch-time-based metric under the new name “engaged views” within Analytics. The platform says creators can continue using engaged views to understand meaningful audience interaction and watch-time performance.

Importantly, YouTube says the YouTube view count update will not change creator earnings or Partner Program eligibility requirements. Those areas will continue relying on engaged metrics rather than the newly standardized public view count.

YouTube also confirmed that the change will not retroactively alter historical view counts, meaning existing totals remain unchanged. Instead, the new measurement system will apply to views generated from August 24 onward across supported video formats.

The adjustment brings YouTube’s public view measurement closer to approaches used by competing platforms including TikTok and Instagram. According to YouTube, the move should provide creators with a clearer understanding of their content’s exposure across different formats.

Creators have increasingly requested consistent view definitions because audiences consume Shorts, traditional videos, and livestreams differently across platforms. Meanwhile, the YouTube view count update could make performance comparisons between different video formats easier for creators and audiences.

YouTube’s distinction between public views and engaged views will therefore remain important when evaluating content performance after August 24.
