Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States on Wednesday, receiving a rare personal welcome from President Donald Trump. Xi arrived at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, where Trump and Melania Trump greeted him alongside his wife, Peng Liyuan.
The arrival marked Xi’s state visit, his first official United States visit in more than ten years as China’s president. Trump personally welcomed Xi at the airport, an unusual diplomatic gesture that highlighted the importance of their upcoming discussions between leaders.
Both leaders stood together during a formal ceremony featuring military honours, national anthems, flags, and a flyover above Joint Base Andrews. Meanwhile, Washington and Beijing announced an extension of their existing trade truce during Xi’s arrival for the state visit.
The agreement extends the current arrangement from November 10 until January 10, according to United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trade remains a central issue as both governments continue negotiating tariffs, agricultural purchases, technology restrictions, and other economic matters between them.
Beyond commerce, Trump and Xi are expected to discuss artificial intelligence, Taiwan, Iran, and broader strategic relations between their governments. Xi’s visit comes months after Trump travelled to Beijing, where the two leaders held discussions about their countries’ complicated relationship.
During the American visit, Xi will attend a state ceremony and meet Trump at the White House on Thursday. The program also includes a state dinner involving prominent American technology executives and other guests from business and government circles.
Xi and Trump are also expected to address artificial intelligence as competition between Washington and Beijing continues across advanced technology sectors. Questions surrounding Taiwan remain another sensitive issue, with both governments maintaining differing positions regarding the island’s status and security.
The leaders’ discussions could also cover the conflict involving Iran, alongside broader international developments affecting their countries and global markets. For now, Xi’s arrival has opened a closely watched diplomatic engagement between two major powers seeking to manage significant differences.
The state visit will continue through September 25, with further meetings and official events scheduled during Xi’s time in America. Xi’s welcome by Trump therefore begins a significant round of talks focused on trade, technology, security, and broader United States-China relations.
