World Cup 2026: Iran Earns Valuable Point Against 10-Man Belgium in Los Angeles

Belgium and Iran played out a 0-0 draw in their World Cup 2026 Group G match in Los Angeles, with Nathan Ngoy‘s red card failing to produce a winner.

The result moved Iran to the top of Group G on goals scored. The point followed their 2-2 draw with New Zealand and boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Iran arrived at the tournament facing travel restrictions and visa issues linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Despite those challenges, the team produced a disciplined display against Belgium.

Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand starred for Iran. He made a brilliant save from close range to deny Maxim De Cuyper. Iran also threatened to attack and forced Thibaut Courtois into two important saves.

Mehdi Taremi appeared to give Iran the lead from a well-worked free-kick. However, VAR ruled the goal out for offside.

Iran gained an advantage when Ngoy received a red card for bringing down Taremi after a poor back pass. Yet the extra man did not help them find a breakthrough.

Belgium created several chances and finished with 23 shots. They also recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.8. However, they lacked sharpness in front of the goal. Romelu Lukaku struggled to make an impact, while Jeremy Doku missed the match through illness.
