UBA Appoints Ibrahim Ajimasu Puri as Non-Executive Director, Pending CBN Approval

UBA appoints Ibrahim Ajimasu Puri as non-executive director, subject to regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Puri previously served as UBA executive director before retiring from the banking group in 2022 after a distinguished career.

With more than 35 years of professional experience, Puri brings expertise spanning banking, fintech, telecommunications, and fast-moving consumer goods. His extensive experience across several industries positions him to contribute valuable knowledge to UBA’s board and strategic decision-making processes.

Puri holds a master’s degree in Banking and Finance from Bayero University, Kano, strengthening his academic foundation in financial management. Beyond UBA, he currently serves on several corporate boards, including Nigerian Breweries Plc and telecommunications company 9mobile.

UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu welcomed Puri’s return, highlighting his experience and professional expertise as valuable additions to the board. Elumelu described Puri as an accomplished professional whose knowledge would strengthen UBA’s governance and long-term strategic direction.

The UBA appointment comes as the bank continues expanding its operations across African markets while strengthening its leadership structure. According to the bank, Puri’s appointment remains subject to approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria before taking effect.

Meanwhile, UBA’s board also approved the bank’s audited financial statements for the first half of 2026 during its recent meeting. The financial results provide additional context for the leadership announcement as UBA continues navigating Nigeria’s evolving banking environment.

Puri’s return marks another chapter in his relationship with UBA after previously holding a senior executive position within the institution. His banking career has included leadership responsibilities that exposed him to financial services, technology, telecommunications, and consumer-focused businesses.

For UBA, his broad experience could support discussions around digital transformation, corporate governance, risk management, and business growth opportunities. The UBA appointment therefore signals the bank’s continued focus on experienced leadership and strong corporate governance across its operations.

Once regulators approve the appointment, Puri will officially resume his responsibilities as a non-executive director on UBA’s board.
