Toluwanisings’ family, widow resolve burial dispute after misunderstanding

Lanre Alewilese, Nigerian gospel singer, says a misunderstanding over advice given to Toluwanisings’ family and widow led to their burial dispute. He revealed that both parties have now agreed to bury the late singer at his Ibadan residence.

Toluwanisings died on October 14. Since then, disagreements over his burial plans have sparked controversy.

His paternal relatives demanded a delay in his burial to allow an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. They also rejected an alleged plan by his widow, Akanbi Elizabeth, to bury him in a cemetery.

Lawal Rauf, the singer’s uncle, insisted that the family wanted him buried beside his mother in Ikirun, Osun State. He also threatened to exhume the body if anyone buried him in a cemetery.

The singer’s grandmother also threatened to curse anyone who opposed the family’s position.

Alewilese speaks on burial dispute

In a now-viral video, Alewilese described the disagreement as a misunderstanding. He suggested that advice from different people may have confused both the widow and the singer’s relatives.

He explained that Toluwanisings’ sudden death meant he could not state his burial wishes before his passing. As a result, different people offered opinions to the grieving family.

Alewilese also said nobody could confirm that the widow personally opposed burying her husband at home.

“Damilola is a good woman, and her husband always called her his peace of mind, even before they got married. Let peace reign. It would have been easy for Toluwanisings to declare where he wanted to be buried before his death if he had been sick. But because his death was sudden, everyone will have an opinion to share with the wife, which might leave her confused,” he said.

“This might also be what is happening on the father’s side, so all these are misunderstandings. Nobody can say they heard the claim that the singer should not be buried in his home directly from his wife.”

Singer appeals for peace

Alewilese confirmed that both parties had reached an agreement to bury Toluwanisings at his home.

He also urged the public to stop attacking the widow and allow her to mourn her husband.

“It is a misunderstanding between them. Now they have reached an agreement; he will be buried in his home. Please, let peace reign. Leave the wife alone to have a peaceful life. The criticism is enough. Damilola is a good person and an accommodating person.”
