Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day has launched with a strong $92.9 million global debut, while the Michael Jackson biopic Michael continues its record-breaking run and edges closer to the $950 million milestone worldwide.
The Universal Pictures release earned $48.9 million from 73 international markets and added $44 million in North America during its opening weekend. The film stars Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor as a meteorologist and a cybersecurity expert who team up to expose a government cover-up involving extraterrestrial life.
Premium large-format screenings played a significant role in the film’s debut, with IMAX contributing $6.5 million from overseas markets. The United Kingdom and Ireland led international earnings with $7.6 million, followed by Mexico with $3.9 million, while China and France each delivered $2.9 million.
Despite the strong start, industry observers are watching its staying power closely. “Sci-fi thrillers do well abroad, [so] foreign business should be good,” predicts David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. “If there’s softness overseas,” he notes, “it’s because China has shrunk so dramatically as a market for U.S. films.”
Meanwhile, Michael added $17 million internationally and $21 million globally in its eighth weekend, lifting its worldwide total to $932.2 million. The musical biopic has already surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing musical biopic ever and is on course to cross $950 million in the coming days
