A startling childhood story has put Seun Kuti back in the spotlight after he revealed how he once helped deliver cannabis, locally known as “Igbo,” to his father, Fela Kuti, during a prison visit.
Speaking in a recent interview, Seun explained that his mother hid the substance inside a loaf of bread and asked him to pass it along while visiting his father in detention. He noted that he was too young at the time to understand the risk, describing the moment as part of the unusual reality of growing up in a household shaped by activism and constant run-ins with authorities.
The singer also pushed back at the interviewer’s line of questioning, repeatedly saying they had “the wrong hero,” suggesting frustration with how his family’s legacy is often reduced to sensational narratives rather than its political roots.
Adding a lighter twist, Seun joked about having a “prison girlfriend,” saying their connection had progressed from exchanging glances to a more interactive stage, a comment that quickly drew reactions online.
Reflecting on his upbringing, he described his parents as fearless, even calling them “real gangsters” for how they navigated difficult situations.
beyond the personal revelations, Seun touched on Africana humanism, stressing that African societies are built on shared responsibility rather than titles or hierarchy. He also criticised modern systems like education, referencing long university strikes and questioning the value of systems that fail the people they serve.
