Selena Gomez says vaping changed her voice, warns against nicotine use

Selena Gomez, the US singer and actress, says heavy nicotine vaping has changed her voice as she opens up about her struggle to quit the habit.

In an Instagram Story, Gomez said she found it difficult to stop vaping after using nicotine heavily. She also admitted that the habit had changed her voice so much that she understood why some people might not enjoy listening to her speak.

The actress said she was glad to have stopped vaping. She also expressed hope that she could stay away from the habit despite the challenges of quitting.

“I’m going to be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot, and it’s so hard to quit. I just want to say, if you are trying to vape, it isn’t worth it,” she said.

“It’s so stupid, and it’s changed my voice, so if you don’t like listening to my voice, it’s understandable. I’m really excited because I stopped, and I just hope I can keep it up because it’s really hard.”

Vaping involves inhaling and exhaling an aerosol from an electronic device. The aerosol comes from heating a liquid that may contain nicotine, flavourings, propylene glycol and other additives.

Nicotine is addictive and can make quitting difficult for regular users. Vaping can also expose the throat and airways to substances that may irritate. However, the exact cause of Gomez’s voice changes remains unclear.

In September 2024, Gomez revealed that she had taken a break from music to prepare for her role in Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language musical film.

She signed with Hollywood Records in 2008 and later formed the band Selena Gomez & the Scene. The group released several albums before she continued her career as a solo artist.
