Saudi Arabia has effectively severed diplomatic ties with Iran following a 48 hour ultimatum issued yesterday for Iran to close its diplomatic mission in Riyadh.
The execution of a prominent Shia cleric has generated massive protests, notably from Iran. The Supreme leader of Iran Ayatollah Khomeini pronounced that Saudi Arabia will experience “divine retribution” for the execution of Sheikh Nimr Al Nimr.
Iranian protesters attacked the Saudi Arabian embassy and Saudi authorities are claiming that documents were taken from the embassy.
Iran has accused Saudi Arabia for using the circumstances a pretext to create tensions.
A statement from the Iranian foreign ministry said, “Iran… is committed to provide diplomatic security based on international conventions. But Saudi Arabia, which thrives on tensions, has used this incident as an excuse to fuel the tensions,”
