The FIFA and CAF investigation begins in Nigeria as both bodies assess the NFF crisis following Ibrahim Gusau’s resignation. FIFA and CAF will meet Nigerian football stakeholders during their joint assessment mission in Abuja.
The mission follows the resignation of Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and several NFF Executive Committee members. Gusau resigned on August 27, ending his tenure alongside other senior federation officials amid growing pressure.
Meanwhile, FIFA and CAF have suspended the NFF electoral process until their assessment reaches a conclusion. The governing bodies want clarity on the legal, administrative, governance and electoral issues surrounding Nigerian football.
Their delegation will also engage the National Sports Commission as officials develop a comprehensive reform roadmap.
The NSC has supported interim arrangements while Nigerian football authorities prepare for broader structural changes. Nigeria’s football crisis has intensified after the Super Eagles missed the 2026 World Cup.
The Super Falcons also missed the 2027 Women’s World Cup after disappointing results during their qualification campaign. These setbacks have increased pressure for stronger administration, accountability and long-term football development.
Furthermore, FIFA and CAF have not announced any final conclusions regarding the leadership crisis. Their current mission focuses on gathering information and hearing directly from relevant Nigerian stakeholders.
