Paul Okoye, formerly known as Rudeboy in the defunct music duo Psquare, says going solo was less stressful because he already handled much of the group’s music production, songwriting and vocals.
The singer spoke during an interview with Luna Lifestyle TV. He was asked if working alone was easier than performing as part of the duo.
Rudeboy said his role in Psquare made the transition to a solo career easier. He also explained that working alone gives him more freedom when creating music.
“Less stressful. It’s the same me that was doing it in the group, with due respect. The same me that was doing it,” he said.
“I’m the producer, I’m the writer, I’m the singer. So moving out of the group, it’s still the same thing. Like I said, less stress.
“We have a team, everybody has their own contribution, but I’m not saying the team I have doesn’t contribute. But what I mean, in the act of creating that music and whatever, I feel nobody is going to question me.”
Psquare comprised twin brothers Paul and Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P. The duo dominated Nigeria’s music scene in the 2000s and 2010s.
Their hit songs include ‘Personally’, ‘Do Me’, ‘Chop My Money’ and ‘Beautiful Onyinye’.
The brothers first split in 2017 after disagreements over the role of their elder brother, Jude Okoye, as their manager.
They reconciled in November 2021 after a five-year feud. The duo also staged their first headline concert after the reunion in December that year.
However, the reunion did not last. In 2024, Paul confirmed that Psquare had split again. He also alleged that Peter was involved in his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Earlier in April, Peter announced that he had officially changed his birth date to November 30. In recent weeks, he also accused Paul of trying to damage his reputation.
